Honor 8X - Review

The best value for money smartphone at the price range.  Honor a sub-brand of Huawei smartphone has stormed the industry with its ambitious smartphone phone Honor 8X. This smartphone comes with every specification to be placed under the best value for money category. The pricing of this smartphone is also aimed at general consumers. Over the past few years, Honor has made a household name among the best budget smartphones and with its latest Honor 8X the bar has been lifted even higher.       The performance of this smartphone is solid and with its glass built design and versatile camera, this smartphone is a treat for Android users. The looks of this smartphone might deceive you into thinking that it's a bit expensive but believe me, it's not pricey. The performance of the smartphone is also a reason for you to choose. With all the smartphones coming out in recent times, this Honor 8X is a good value for money.

Key features

  • Fullscreen in front, glass in the back, and framed with metal
  • It has a large screen size of 1080 x 2340
  • It comes with Mid-range CPU

Overall Design

  • Metal and glass design
  • micro USB charging
  • Very high screen-to-body ratio
The design of the Honor 8X is similar to the most expensive phones but it is available in a quarter of that mobile price. This front screen is quite similar to an iPhone XR or OnePlus 6. It comes with an ultra-slim screen of 6.5 inches that makes the Honor 8X pleasant to use. This is slim at 7.8mm thickness. As mentioned, it has a glass back and metal sides which give an attractive look to the mobile. It also has 20MP and 2MP dual-lens rear camera and a 16MP front camera which allows you to take perfect pictures at any angle.

1. Screen

  • 6.5-inch 19.5:9 LCD screen, 1080 x 2340 pixels
  • Notch, which can be hidden
  • Customizable color profile
The Honor 8X comes with a large, 6.5-inch 19.5:9 LCD screen with a fairly narrow notch. The notch can be blocked by activating the top black bar. This model allows you to use slightly unruly 'vivid' color mode, but it is not quite tasteful like expensive phones. However, it is one of the best models with an attractive screen like expensive mobiles.

2. Battery life

  • 3,750mAh battery
  • micro USB charging
The Honor 8X is packed with a 3,750mAh battery, which is quite good for a longer run. It provides stamina to the mobile for a long time even in heavy usage like several hours of audio streaming, a couple of hours of intermittent browsing, and about 30 minutes of YouTube streams. The battery lasts longer than the iPhone XS. The mobile-only lacks 13% of the battery level when 90 minutes of 720p video playback played at maximum brightness. A micro USB can be used to the Honor 8X for charging. The battery would be charged fastly in variable voltages. So, it is one of the best choices among Honor and Huawei’s brand.

3. Camera

  • Dual rear 20MP/2MP cameras
  • Night mode
  • 16MP front camera
The Honor 8X has an ultra-low light mode like Huawei P20 Pro and dual-lens system that is good for synthetic wide aperture (background blur) shots, and an AI model. This camera makes the mobile feature-rich camera phone. However, we noticed a small issue in this model, which is shooting speed. It is not an instant snapper but just a slight shutter lag. However, this is not a major problem common in most of the different brand mobiles. The main 20MP sensor with f/1.8 offers a quality image. With good pixel, the daylight shots are sharp and detailed. It has a high-res sensor and some very solid dynamic range post-auto-optimization that handles mixed lighting levels well. Everything looks a little less natural than through a top-end 12MP camera paired with intelligent processing. However, this is exactly what we expected from the Honor 8X. So this is a great choice considering the cost. The second camera only has a crude 2MP sensor, but the images are much better than what you see when shooting. With this, you can also get some dynamic-looking images.

4. Software

  • Android 8.1 with EMUI
  • Good performance
  • Quite a lot of pre-installs
The Honor 8X has Android 8.1 and Huawei’s EMUI that offers long-standing detractors. Now, this is the version available on most Honor phones. A new Android version is fairly visually coherent and offers lots of customization. EMUI just have home screens but does not have one as standard. However, the Android staple can be reinstated in the Settings menu.  This app's menu is slightly different from the normal. It can be scrolled vertically and also has an alphabet shortcut on the right-hand-side.

5. Games and video

  • The display is great for games and video
  • Reasonable quality, but it is mono, speaker
The Honor 8X has a big screen which is great for gamers. It has a more powerful chipset, which is good for demanding 3D games like Ark Survival. Its Kirin 970 CPU has a 12-core Mali-G72 graphics chipset that handles games much better. Pros
  • Great value
  • Very modern look
  • Good performance
Cons
  • Flaky camera background blur mode
  • Micro USB charging
  • Honor Play is more powerful
